Watching Bennett

I had always heard that the best part of being a grandmother is that you are at a place in your life where you can take the time to simply spend time with your grandchildren…clearing your slate – at least for a few hours – of all daily “necessities”, and sharing their world.

My time with Bennett is usually after feedings and diapering. He is dry and content, and if not ready to sleep just yet, he is fairly close.

I can sit for hours and watch his blue eyes flicker open and closed, and all manner of expressions cross his face as his brain “works out”.

He will grunt and coo, and should he startle himself with action, or become distressed, can usually be calmed with “shushing” (a topic for another blog).

Last night I took the 9:30-11 p.m. shift so mom and dad could rest, and after finally reaching a state of deep sleep, Bennett snoozed soundly resting on my chest…a compact bundle of warm baby breathing softly in the night.

Of course, by 11, he was ready to eat, so I handed him over to mom for feeding, and I headed to sleep under cozy flannel sheets and a fluffy down comforter.

Aahh, yes….there ARE many benefits of grandmother status!
