Shrimp-R-Us & More

If ever you happen to drive through the town of Waleka, Florida, make sure you don’t blink or you will miss it for sure.

Waleka is a sleepy little spot on the St. Johns river, which is home to several resorts, beauty parlors, churches, a pharmacy, convenience store, and a great little cafe called Shrimp-R-Us  & More.

We traveled to Waleka on Monday, to visit a beautiful resort owned by the couple who also own Suwannee Valley Campground where we are staying this winter.

After a lovely tour of the cottages and dock, and visiting with other workampers, it was time for lunch so we headed down the street and around the corner to Shrimp-R-Us.

It’s an unassuming place both outside and inside – looking much like so many other small town cafes that have been in business for years, and added on to accommodate a growing clientele. There was an outdoor patio, but we decided to dine indoors as the day was cooling off a bit.

It was well past the lunch hour when we arrived, but there were several groups of people occupying other tables. Signs outside welcomed bikers, and we are guessing it is a popular destination for those corporate bikers who get out for nice rides on the weekends.

Our server was friendly and feisty, and appeared as soon as we sat down, to hand out menus and take our drink order…sweet tea for Keith and water for me. Once we had our drinks, we proceeded to order.

Keith and I both chose the 17 shrimp plate for $9.95 ~ mine grilled and his breaded and fried. We had our choice of two sides from a long list written on a white board…everything from lima beans and collards to sweet potato casserole, and of course, regular options like coleslaw and baked potatoes. I decided on cole slaw and sweet potato fries, while Keith went with the lima beans and cheese grits.

Our food was served up in no time flat…plates heaping with shrimp and separate bowls for the side dishes, plus two fabulous hush puppies per plate ~ crunchy on the outside, flaky on the inside, and not drenched in grease. They were wonderful!

We probably could have made two meals from each of our plates, but the food was so tasty that we just kept eating until nothing was left, keeping in mind that this meal would no doubt be our last for the day, but believe me, it was worth it.

We were very pleased with both our meal and the service, and would recommend Shrimp-R-Us to anyone looking for a good homestyle cooking at reasonable prices…and besides, you’ve just gotta love that name!

  1. At last this computer can retrieve attachments. Machine has been in and out of the shop and came home yesterday, healed, with a laptop added to our family. Will write more later.

    Love you, Carmen

    • So good to hear from you, and to know that your silence was technologically based, and not due to health or other issues…give everyone there my love!
