What I Did On My Summer Vacation

This morning Keith and I sit on the banks of the Mississippi, drinking coffee and watching tug boats push barges upriver…but that, and our travels the past few days are fodder for a future post, as there is so much more to show and tell about our week at Myrtle Beach.

In honor of the fact that school has started in many places across the country, I decided to fashion this post as a pictorial essay, along the lines of the traditional grade school topic, “What I did on my summer vacation”.

On my summer vacation in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, we watched the sun rise over the Atlantic…

Enjoyed egrets frolicking at the water’s edge…

Were treated to a delightful dinner on the patio at the Saltwater Creek restaurant in Murrells Inlet, by my daughter and her husband.

We arrived in time for “Early Bird Specials”…$3 cocktails all around…tasty fish tacos, succulent filet mignon, flaky fresh flounder, to-die-for mashed potatoes, and key lime pie for desert. Most excellent!

Arrived at the beach early to claim our spot and set up our canopy for the day. This is the “before” picture…

This is what the beach looked like later in the day!

It was fun to watch all the people, and it totally amazed me that with so many women on the beach, there were no duplicate bathing suits 🙂

We had a lot of fun jumping the waves, and Keith practiced his body surfing techniques.

Here is “the crew” hanging out on the beach in the shade…

On Saturday we drove over to Prosser’s Bar-b-Que in Murrells Inlet, for their famous lunch buffet of southern comfort foods. I heaped my plate high with blackeyed peas, greens, butter beans, sweet potato casserole, amazing fried chicken, pork chops, fish and clams, hush puppies and peach cobbler!

If you ever have the chance, you should eat at Prosser’s, but steer clear of the mashed potatoes…which are instant. Imagine that, in a restaurant that prides itself in homemade food. Oh well, nobody is perfect, but they sure come close!

On Labor Day, we drove over to the boardwalk in Myrtle Beach, for a visit to the Gay Dolphin, the largest souvenir shop on the east coast. Who could resist that!

The place was a maze of rooms filled with all manner of beach and maritime related objects, jewelry, t-shirts, and trinkets designed for tourists.

The whole boardwalk area had the look and feel of a carnival, complete with a ferris wheel!

Our entire vacation was fantastic. Bennett was an angel, always smiling and making us laugh. I already miss the cute way that he broke into a grin every time he saw me.

And, as my daughter said, it is pretty amazing that five people could spend a full week in a 400 square foot camper without issues.

I think we are all hoping to do it again next year!

  1. […] Our trip: four adults, one baby, one cat, one 400 square-foot RV, one week, zero scuffles or tussles.  Wow!  We had a good time!  Thank you, Grammy and Keifers!  (You can read more about our week at the beach at their blog, For Drinks and Tips.) […]

  2. What a fun week! Love and thanks to you two!

    • Our pleasure….we’ll do it again any time!

  3. […] spent a fun-filled week at Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, and you can read all about it on my first “What I Did on My Summer Vacation” blog […]
