After a fantastic show last Friday night at Cafe Groovy Gritz in T or C, NM, we packed our bags ad caught a jet plane heading east on Saturday morning, landing in Richmond, Virginia around 9:30 that night.

A 40 minute drive later, we arrived at our destination ~ a two-story brick colonial home in Williamsburg ~ home of my daughter, son-in-law, and 18 month-old grandson, Bennett…”B” for short.

The traveling complete, we settled in for two weeks of “R&R”….hanging out with B, reading books, playing basketball (his latest obsession), doing the “walk-around” (running from room to room – all by his self, but sometimes being chased by Grammy (me), in a wild game of “get-you”!).

His schedule is our schedule…..we play when he plays, and relax while he naps….watching a movie (so far, “Melancholia” and “Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy”) or reading books and magazines. In the evening, we pull out the guitars and entertain with a few tunes.

We go to the park, or walk to the nearby beach on the James River, where this photo of B’s family was taken on Father’s Day….

Last night we enjoyed a southern comfort food dinner at Honeybutter’s Kitchen….my plate was heaped with catfish, fried okra, coleslaw, and a thick slice of grilled cornbread…..Keith dined on trout, black-eyed peas, and garlic fried potatoes. B’s mom and dad selected barbecue pork with black-eyed peas and garlic potatoes, and shrimp and grits with greens. We all enjoyed our meals, and left with two “To Go” boxes for midnight snacking.

Riding in the car is always an adventure, complete with running commentary by Bennett, who talks amazingly well for his age ~ he has an eagle-eye, too, and will announce every time he sees a flag or basketball goal, truck or tree.

We’re having a blast!

I hadn’t realized how much I needed a break from our regular routine, until the day after we arrived, when I actually felt my body heave a big sigh of relief, let go of all worldly concerns, and just “be”.

Tomorrow we’ll be one week into our R&R, and plan to enjoy our second week at least as much as the first!

  1. So glad you are enjoying your time in VA – and getting to spend some quality time with the entire Haug-Evanhoe family. Give everyone a hug from us!
